Beyond the ordinary
The Maddening World is an example of Pathetic Fallacy.
Here is why it fits the definition:
🔹️ Definition of Pathetic Fallacy:
▪️ Coined by John Ruskin, it is a
literary device where human emotions, thoughts, or sensations are attributed to inanimate objects, nature, or abstract concepts.
🔹️ Application:
▪️ The world is an inanimate, non-
human entity; it cannot literally feel or cause the human emotion of madness ("maddening"). By describing it as "maddening," the writer projects a human experience (feeling driven crazy) onto the world, making the environment mirror or cause an emotional state.
