A Movie Legend
And A Legendary Story
The story of Jason and the Argonauts is one of the most famous quests in Greek mythology, following the hero Jason as he leads a band of 50 legendary heroes on a journey to retrieve the fabled Golden Fleece.
The Mythological Quest.
🔹️ In the original legend, Jason must
retrieve the Fleece to reclaim his rightful throne from his uncle Pelias, who had usurped it.
🔹️ The Ship:
▪️ Jason commissioned the Argo, a
swift vessel built by Argos with the help of the goddess Athena. It featured a piece of speaking timber from Zeus’ enchanted forest that offered guidance.
🔹️ The Argonauts:
▪️ The crew included Greece's
greatest heroes, such as Hercules, the musician Orpheus, and the twins Castor and Polydeuces.
Key Obstacles.
🔹️ The Symplegades:
▪️ Giant 'Clashing Rocks' that
crushed ships; Jason passed by following a dove's flight.
🔹️ The Harpies:
▪️ Flying monsters that tormented
the blind prophet Phineus until the Argonauts drove them away.
🔹️ The Tasks of Aeëtes:
▪️ Upon reaching Colchis, King
Aeëtes forced Jason to yoke fire-breathing bulls and sow dragon's teeth that sprouted into an army of warriors.
🔹️ The Role of Medea:
▪️ The sorceress Medea, Aeëtes’
daughter, fell in love with Jason and used her magic to help him complete these tasks and put the guardian dragon of the Fleece to sleep.
Iconic 1963 Film.
🔹️ Many modern audiences
recognise the story through the classic 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts, directed by Don Chaffey.
🔹️ Ray Harryhausen's Effects:
▪️ The film is legendary for its stop-
motion animation, particularly the seven-headed Hydra and the iconic battle against seven skeleton warriors.
🔹️ Differences from Myth:
▪️ The film changes several details,
such as making the Fleece's guardian a Hydra instead of a dragon and having Pelias sow the teeth to summon the skeletons rather than Jason.
🔹️ Musical Score:
▪️ It features a powerful score
by Bernard Herrmann, a frequent collaborator of Harryhausen.
Tragic Conclusion.
Unlike many heroic tales, Jason's story ends in tragedy. After returning home, Jason eventually abandons Medea for a princess of Corinth. In revenge, Medea murders the princess and her own children with Jason. Jason dies an old, lonely man when a rotting beam from his ship, the Argo, falls and crushes him.
