Beyond The Ordinary

Illegitimi non carborundum is a famous fake-Latin phrase that means Don't let the bastards grind you down. It combines mock Latin with carborundum, which is a real industrial grinding powder.

 

History of the Phrase.

 

Coined around World War II by British Army Intelligence. Used as a personal motto by US Army General 'Vinegar' Joe Stilwell. Made popular in US politics by Barry Goldwater in 1964. Varied as 'Nolite te bastardes carborundorum' in Margaret Atwood's book The Handmaid's Tale.

 

Why It Is Not Real.

 

Illegitimi looks like a Latin word, but ancient Romans did not use it to mean "bastards". Carborundum is a modern brand name for a sand-like tool used to grind hard objects. The grammar is mixed up on purpose to sound funny.

The above number consists of the three digits 4, 5 and 6 displayed on a three digit 7-segment display unit. You can confirm for yourself that each digit uses the same number of illuminated segments as the number itself ie. 4 uses 4 segments, 5 uses 5 segments and 6 uses 6 segments. These are the only numbers for which this is true.

Because of the above property, the sum of the digits equals the number of segments used to display them ie. 4+5+6 = 4 (segments) + 5 (segments) + 6 (segments) = 15. 15 = 2×7.5 = α˜―β„§ or ᔐ.

Because of the contextual nature of expressions in Qu, 57 can= ᘯ or β„§. The fact that 57 can= β„§ implies that 75 can= ᘯ. In Qu, to get 75 as β„§, you read the stylised digits 7 and 5 from left to right. To get 57 as a different symbol from β„§, you read the digits from right to left and invert the symbol to get ᘯ. Context determines whether ᘯ is 57 or 75 and whether β„§ is 75 or 57.

Note from above that β„§ can= 7.5. With this number, we think of β„§ containing, in addition to 7 and 5, the unification number 6. 6 can be thought of as superglue providing strong connection and reduced to a small point - like the glue between two parts joined by adhesion.

When you take the mirror image of a digit or number and let |N have the same arithmetical value as N|, N| is said to have been spun with |N as it's spin. So, for instance, P9 is the spin of 99 (P is standing in for a spun 9 here) and P is the spin of 9.

Note that not all of the digits of a number need to be spun in order to make a spin. Note also, that a number and it's mirror image are not always defined to be arithmetically equal.

212 is the boiling point of water in degrees Fahrenheit at sea-level (standard) air pressure.

 

F is, of course, the initial letter of both Fahrenheit and Flood.

I found the following image on Pinterest in a rather rough state. I used AI to tidy it up and sharpen it. It is a magic hexagon (not a normal one) which uses the mathematical facts given on the next panel. πŸ‘‡

6 = 21? The sum of the first 6 numbers used (1 to 12). 6 = 57? The sum of the last 6 numbers used.

78/13 = 666? Using pathematics, I've often written down equations like this myself. πŸ™‚

In mathematics, many results are trivial (ie. they do not require a complex explanation) but are, nevertheless, aesthetically pleasing and often used in recreational mathematics. Hence their use by people into mysticism etc.

21 and it's switch (12) are used in the numbers 212 and 2112. 57 is Omega.
