The Main HALO Page

This image displays A Sun Halo, an atmospheric optical phenomenon.

It is created when sunlight interacts with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, specifically those in thin, high-altitude clouds like cirrus clouds.

The light is refracted (bent) and reflected by these hexagonal ice crystals, forming a ring or circle of light around the sun.

While the most common form is The (Circular) 22-Degree Halo shown here, other forms such as Parhelia, or Sun Dogs, can also occur alongside it.

More On Halos & Moron Halos

(Sometimes I'm talking about Halos and sometimes I'm talking about Zun Dogs - perhaps at the same time)

A Halo (from Ancient Greek ἅλως (hálōs) 'threshing floor, disk') is an optical phenomenon produced by light (typically from the Sun or Moon) interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Halos can have many forms, ranging from colored or white rings to arcs and spots in the sky. Many of these appear near the Sun or Moon, but others occur elsewhere or even in the opposite part of the sky. Among the best known halo types are the circular halo (properly called The 22° Halo), light pillars, and sun dogs, but many others occur; some are fairly common while others are extremely rare.

Beyond The Ordinary

Parhelia, commonly known as Sun Dogs or Mock Suns, are atmospheric optical phenomena appearing as bright, often colorful spots on either side of the sun. Caused by sunlight refracting through plate-shaped ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds, they are most visible when the sun is low on the horizon.

Key Characteristics Of Parhelia Include.

• Appearance: They look like bright spots, luminous patches, or "false suns" that often appear within a 22° halo around the sun.

• Coloration: They are frequently colored, with red closer to the sun and blue/white tails extending outward.

• Mechanism: Hexagonal ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds act as prisms, refracting light.

• Location: They are most common in cold, high-latitude regions or during winter when ice crystals are abundant in the atmosphere, but they can appear anywhere.

• Terminology: The term "parhelia" is the plural of parhelion, from Greek, meaning "beside the sun".

Beyond The Ordinary

The Halo Series is a premier military science-fiction media franchise, primarily known for its genre-defining first-person shooter video games. Set roughly 500 years in the future, the narrative follows Master Chief John-117, a cybernetically enhanced human super-soldier (Spartan), and his artificial intelligence companion, Cortana, as they defend humanity against a powerful alien alliance known as the Covenant.

Key Game Installments.

The series is divided into several main story arcs and includes numerous spin-offs across different genres:

• Original Trilogy (Bungie, 2001–2007): Includes Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3. These titles established the "Golden Triangle" of gameplay—weapons, grenades, and melee—and pioneered online multiplayer features.

• Reclaimer Saga (343 Industries, 2012–2021): Comprises Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and the semi-open world Halo Infinite available at Harvey Norman.

• Major Spin-offs: Includes the prequels Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST, as well as real-time strategy games like Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2.

• Compilations: Halo: The Master Chief Collection (available at xbox.com) brings together the first six main games with remastered graphics and unified multiplayer.

Core Universe Elements.

• The Halos: Massive, ring-shaped superweapons built by an ancient race called the Forerunners to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy as a last resort against a parasitic threat known as the Flood.

• Factions: Players primarily fight as the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) against the Covenant, the Flood, and later factions like the Banished.

• Expansion: Beyond games, the franchise spans dozens of novels, comic books, and a live-action television series.

Recently, the developing studio 343 Industries rebranded as Halo Studios, announcing a shift to Unreal Engine 5 for future projects, including a total remake of the first game titled Halo: Campaign Evolved slated for 2026.
